If Canaries is of interest they do most of their communicating via a Google listserve and skype. I'm on their listserve.     the automation process is slowly coming to market as a black box device. there are certainly dangers to building your own APS - the wrong amount of insulin can be fatal - but so far no one has been harmed. they've built in lots of safety precautions into the process. clarifying info: to build an APS you have to already have 2 other medical devices: 1. the implanted continuous glucos monitor and 2. the insulin pump - APS allows the two devices to communicate with one another.
    why /how did you choose these 3 studies?
    i picked 3 care groups that share information online - focusing on chronic auto-immune diseases (the immune system was influential in network theories developing round AIDS + internet) because they mostly effect women in parts of the world that are most saturated with digital technologies (some feel there is a correlation) and are not quickly diagnosed or effectively treated due to bias in the medical industry. there's a lot of admin and emotional labor in care work and it's gendered and unwaged. i also wanted to pick groups that challenged my own assumptions about fb, quantified self, alternative meds, etc. and would complicate any institutional criticism. taken together their methods could support eachother in how they grow. i also studied patientslikeme.com which is like the facebook of collective care and feeds directly back to pharma companies, 23andme, etc. they are easy to criticize and also interesting. if the case studies seem too specific i'd look there.

just came across this! FDA new regulatory approach to "real world" data (like openaps). OpenAPS sees this as a positive but i feel mistrust (corps will profit from volunteer labor etc.)

my mistake - i said dana helped create nightscout but i was thinking of autotune. you are right - the nightscout is part of the available/existing pieces that openaps incorporates

regarding language of OpenAPS - it's been observed that people who find it most difficult to decipher are those who have the most engineering/programming expertise. they come with certain expectations and openaps doesn't match those expectations so the less connected you are to maker culture is sort of an advantage. *should note i think this is the case now that it's an established system but what it took to get openaps started was very much a maker mentality of hackers/programmers/engineers.  Dana is none of those things - but was motivated by need/necessity/brought the collective together. 

also - the openaps community will help new people through the process

implants can be covered by insurance, paid for by patient or provided by the medical device company - at no patient cost - as part of a study (if you are eligible to participate in a study)
the rigs are being built because there is no closed loop option available on the market - and it allows patients to feel more in control of their lives/health (sleep through the night, personalize their dosages, able to travel more freely). the people who build rigs have enough access to healthcare to improve upon the most high-tech, most expensive treatment for type 1 diabetes (the implanted CGM - continuous glucose monitor and pump) so it is not a choice made as last resort. this is part of why they are interested in fda regulation because they are operating under the assumption that fda approval would improve access to lower income people with type 1 - since the CGMs are now going to be covered by US gov programs Medicare and Medicaid https://finance.yahoo.com/news/medicare-announces-criteria-covering-dexcom-123000917.html

Yes as long as their community stays underground but it seems they would happily welcome fda approval yes for me that is the danger! This issue is almost never covered in the press, at least not nearly as often as you can see open apps, a community of some hundred people.yes - the trend in research for type 1 treatements (and i think this can be said as true for all health studies) focuses on innovation and profitable gadgets rather than the most simple, low cost alteration to the existing/available treatments- but swaths of type 1 populations are dealing with insulin self-injections still and would most benefit from generics. the tic tac container used to house many openaps rigs is used as an emblem of how tiny but also cheaply assembled the hardware is. this obscures the true socioeconomic landscape.

I'm thinking of the movement between physiological affect (feeling bad/glucose level ~feels~ wrong) front end (interface of glucose monitor, led screen) raspberry/code (that you have programmed all or in part yourself). would that be calibration ?could you say more about this? i'm not sure i understand what calibration means for such device (and it seems that's a daily operation) ? yeah - the device connects the constant measuring of blood sugars to the device that pumps insulin: in order to calibrate the levels to steady - not spiky - in an automated way. it's function doesn't rely on how a person feels - but the person has already been trained that they can't go on (trust) feeling they must always test their levels and respond based on the numbers. so the question of realtion between physiological affect and code had me thinking about biofeedback treatments. Kym: So im wondering if the relation you have to discomfort for example includes scepticism about the way you have coded the pi. we are again trying to work out why makers would want FDA approvalperhaps it has to do with their "we are not waiting" motto. they are frustrated with the slow pace of things coming to market. openaps started in 2015 - so they say the tech ability has been there since then but it's still not something your doctor can prescribe - you have to build it yourself. and so getting involved with the fda was first mentioned to me as an academic exercise that might also cut back on the years of studies it takes to get a tech improvement widely available. so it's couched in terms of accessibility but with this kind of caveat that there would have to be a fire wall btw the makers and the fda. they presuppose that this is a "greater good" but i think it opens the door to all kinds of - ugh

scale = value? the more people use, the more valuable it is?
that makers dont all have the same ethical concerns - innovation ethics are not the same as free software ethicsthat's an important distinction!

I'm thinking of the movement between physiological affect (feeling bad/glucose level ~feels~ wrong) front end (interface of glucose monitor, led screen) raspberry/code (that you have programmed all or in part yourself). would that be calibration ?could you say more about this? i'm not sure i understand what calibration means for such device (and it seems that's a daily operation) ? yeah - the device connects the constant measuring of blood sugars to the device that pumps insulin: in order to calibrate the levels to steady - not spiky - in an automated way. it's function doesn't rely on how a person feels - but the person has already been trained that they can't go on (trust) feeling they must always test their levels and respond based on the numbers. so the question of realtion between physiological affect and code had me thinking about biofeedback treatments. Kym: So im wondering if the relation you have to discomfort for example includes scepticism about the way you have coded the pi. we are again trying to work out why makers would want FDA approvalperhaps it has to do with their "we are not waiting" motto. they are frustrated with the slow pace of things coming to market. openaps started in 2015 - so they say the tech ability has been there since then but it's still not something your doctor can prescribe - you have to build it yourself. and so getting involved with the fda was first mentioned to me as an academic exercise that might also cut back on the years of studies it takes to get a tech improvement widely available. so it's couched in terms of accessibility but with this kind of caveat that there would have to be a fire wall btw the makers and the fda. they presuppose that this is a "greater good" but i think it opens the door to all kinds of - ugh

Recently we've been studying patient groups that formed online to learn how digital boundaries form a collective care.  And we've been experimenting with ways to collectively feel through cyberspace.
The groups we've been studying are:

a. Canaries - 120+ femme and non-gender conforming artists with chronic auto-immune illnesses that support each other and, as a collective art practice, focus on communal care.

All the groups operate autonomously. Their development is organic; supported by digital technologies which allow them to share information and keep in contact online. They receive no funding and run on volunteer labor. For the most part, they started in and are primarily based in the US. They all identify with chronic auto-immune conditions, a tiny sliver of all chronic illness. Together they suggest an extreme variety of needs and expectations of care, communication, and data. 

We've taken recordings from Skype interviews and assembled some audio clips that suggest the groups real world data produce: 
patients as digital labors
precarious collectives
interfaces of feeling
world making projects

We'd like to try to use some data forensics tools, to try to see what kinds of individual data are being given away through patients use of - for example - facebook.

Through the medium of radio, we could like to conduct learning through close observation how we see
and feel spoken words. What does it mean to speak and listen when your aural conversation spans

What are the benefits in physical distance (ability to be a passive listener / a bold speaker)?
How could you make a chain of speaking and listening that steps out of its echo chamber?

I am currently exploring the notion of utopia, or hopeful social thought more generally, and am trying to situate it relative to the poles of the cybernetic and governmental on the one hand, and the religious or theological on the other. Frederic Jameson analyzes utopia as one of the “antinomies of postmodernity,” a figure of thought that in contemporary critical discourse can easily transmute into its opposite and vice-versa. This aporia, or really a too-much-poria, the infinite mutability of contemporary thought, our endless spinning in circles or navigating the same well-rehearsed critical path over and over again seems to have a lot to do with my obsessive checking of my Facebook even as I’m writing this, i.e. a kind of refrain, a denial. I’m curious what we are denying. Probably we are denying that we have more agency than we take credit for. But I think we are denying also what is holding us back, a hidden ideology that we have yet to recognize. One aspect of this is guilt – not only our guilt and complicity in the present order, but a kind of existential guilt, a guilt that underlies capitalist economy in general. Even the sentence I wrote a few back “more agency than we take credit for,” which relates “credit” and “agency” underscores this relationship between economy, guilt, and denial. Guilt is also the economy of Christianity, and so I also wonder if we can think about the ideology of the ever-present crisis as a religious(istic) eschatology, a blind messianic or apocalyptic belief of the impending rupture of the human (colonialist/eurocentric?) project, or a latent hyper-individualist/hyper-rationalist trans-human gnosticism that seeks to overcome the profound limits of our world by way of a secret inner technological power, an anti-feminist cyborg? All this is to say that I want to re-think utopia as a conceptual spiral that we need to escape. I’m guided in part by critical theory, and in part by writers like Ursula Le Guinn and Andrei Platonov who have destabilized what a “utopia” might be. 

I’m interested in applying these critiques of utopia to the open source movement. I have long thought that the open source model could be translated into collective organization and have tried a few performance-based projects based on it – it seems perfectly suited to self-organizing collectives that would work to modify the central property relationships within capitalism. But I also wonder if it is not stricken by the same profound inequalities of the world that maintain our guilt, and that our guilt reproduces. Like late capitalism, open source privileges intellectual property and labor only, and is designed to benefit primarily major tech corporations who now have a global workforce of volunteers coding their software while they profit from a service-oriented SAAS approach of 24/7 globalized cloud hosting. Like all utopias, open source is also profoundly anti-utopian.

I don’t have a proposed escape route from this endless critical loop but I believe that it requires a step back to think about what a collectivity is, what it can do, and how technology can be a glue or a medium instead of a pass-coded barrier to participation. And then it will require a leap, one that recognizes that when everything expires in its opposite there is nothing left to analyze or name – only a bare collectivity.

Institute of Imitation (iOi)
After several years of experimenting with art machineries I have fullfilled
most of my desires as a DIY inventor. During the period I finished my
second masters in art education I got deep into the notion of critical
pedagogy. My enthusiasm was being fueled by several personal
experiences. Thanks to my family’s nomadic lifestyle, as a kid I have
participated in eight different schools: catholic, Rudolf Steiner,
Montessori, art-focused and average public ones, and later on two art
universities as-well. Since the early years I tried to develop my critical
point-of-view on these institutions and those operating systems behind.
In 2011 the Hungarian government introduced a retrograde, control-
freak, destructive educational reform. A new young generation got
betrayed and injustice is supported by the State on an epic scale.
Institute of Imitation (iOi) is a vision from a not too far dystopia where
any social form of education is prohibited and has to be punished 1 . We
see scenes as SWAT teams chasing little geeks in dark alleys. Nerds
studying geopolitics from fake comic-books. iOi is a place for praxis
where people come together to develop the most sophisticated
methods for learning from each other in secret. It is a permanent
experiment on many different levels. They investigate the capacity of
cultural translation, decision making, reality-checking, empathy,
uselessnes, power, quantity and quality of inteligence.

Here now iOi is represented by the narrative of movies, but it should not
be limited to these fictional images. My longer goal is to set up this
praxis step-by-step.
The backbone of my proposal is a code for working group organizing or
lets say a preprogrammed gathering method that I call the Circles of
Uncertainty. This name was adapted from Paulo Freire, the brazilian
educator, philosopher and leading advocate of critical pedagogy. I
transcripted his term of Circles of Certainty 2 which refers to groups
where overcoded circumstances make born of new ideas and reflection
impossible. This inspired me to come up with exactly the opposite idea,
wherein participants can take the freedom to work with whoever they
want (escaping from their institutional circle as university, office, club,
gang, etc). Within the Circle of Uncertainty we can also decide what we
want to talk about and how we are going to put it into action. This aim is
moved by the very liberating idea even more a vision to cut the chains
of social-institutional circumstances we are born with and later build
around us during our carreer.
As also thought by Freire we will avoid the danger of falling into
verbalism so we will take action: create and experiment. We will also
practice the permanent play of self-reflection. Circles of Uncertainity is
going to be our framework for praxis.

explained in five simple steps. Further circles will be initiatied by the
members of Circle A.
Setting up a Circle of Uncertainty:
1. Circle A initiator (in this case me, AA) finds only one person who is
willing to join (AB). The reason can be a common ethos or an
interest in a mission plan they both share.
2. The founders (AA) discusses his idea about the circle and
encourages AB to find a third person to build towards the circle.
3. AB finds a third person (AC) who is willing to join and shares some
of the ideas and visions AA and AB do. AB also explains the
importance of the collaboration.
4. AC keeps on whith the same method.
5. And so on until everybody agress that the circle should temporary or
permanently stop growing. Circle A starts his activity.
The power of this method lies not only in it’s simplicity but in the very
idea that anybody can freely initiate a discussion and program without
important resources and social embeddedness or even perfect ideas.
Not by accident it can also remind us the gangs of elementary school
playground where a shared fictional story (ethos) could give enough
inspiration for a months-long epic game. We are all locked to the same
playground, why build further limitations into play? The university,
offices, labs, and other working environments are buildt on social walls.
In this perspective they gain their respected comfort of certainty from
separation and limitation of free flow of knowledge. Circles of
Uncertainity projects carry the vision that we don’t need these borders
in order to discuss, create, experiment, take action, and reflect.

Proposal for participation
I would like to ask the Relearn participants to set up their own instant
prototype of Circle of Uncertainity. That could happen within the fresh
Relearn community or along with the residents of Poortgebouw. Any
alternative approach is more than welcome. My main interest lies in the
possibility of getting valuable critical input from participants with
professional interest in codeing and/or broad application of networks.

Headless design is done by running code on the command line without relying on a graphical user interface (GUI). Most designers interact with computers through a GUI since icons are intuitive and user-friendly, while the command line opposes significant resistance.

Bash, that arcane language, a design tool? We look collectively into the use of the shell as a design tool and explore graphic design in headless mode in the light of the dependency relationship between text and design. How does this austere (user-hostile?) relationship impact a designer’s thinking and practice?

Wittingly captured in a 1994 column by Umberto Eco, the analogy beween the Catholic/Protestant theological dichotomy on the one hand and the Macintosh/MS-DOS paradigms on the other hand, points to the dialectic of live and delayed visual feedback: “I am firmly of the opinion that the Macintosh is Catholic and that DOS is Protestant.”

Whether ultimately “the use of one system rather than another leads to profound inner changes” (Eco) is a question worth researching.

Design has increasingly become engaged with computer programming as a mode of expression. According to the "sapir-whorf hypothesis" language influences or even determines the way in which we think and understand reality. Yet, for the most we tend to uncritically think through things like HTML/CSS as the standard way of showing things on a screen. Yet these systems have often developed slowly over time invisibly encorporating or even locking-in ideas and ideologies.

Here are a few possible research topics

Trees, trees all the way down
One of the concepts that seem central is that of the "tree". In order to represent linguistic structures, computers use what is called a "parse tree".  Similarly, graphics software has a "scene tree" which represents objects to be drawn on the screen.

However, As design theorist Christopher Alexander argues lucidly in his essay "the city is not a tree" [1] one of the main failures of modernist urbanism was exactly the reliance on tree-like representations. This type of urbanism, Alexander says, ignores the fact that there are translateral links between elements, not only hierarchical ones.

Lock-in
Q:  Are we really sure that "lock in" is such a powerful force in technology?  Don't markets eventually work their way out of lock in?

A:  Maybe markets can do that, at least in some instances, but it's a different dynamic than what I'm addressing in the book.  I used to use a different word for what I'm talking about.  In older essays like Karma Vertigo I asserted that "Digitally-amplified Idea Sedimentation" was a distinct phenomenon from technological lock-in.  In the book I decided to use the term "lock-in" for both cases, in order to keep things simple.  Based on feedback I've been getting, I now wish I had continued to use a distinguishing term.    There is a coupling between lock-in and "sedimentation" but they are not the same thing.  Sedimentation happens when digital representations of ideas become causal forces in the evolution of those ideas.  That means that the ideas become more flat and bland in addition to stagnating.

Headless design is done by running code on the command line without relying on a graphical user interface (GUI). Most designers interact with computers through a GUI since icons are intuitive and user-friendly, while the command line opposes significant resistance.

Bash, that arcane language, a design tool? We look collectively into the use of the shell as a design tool and explore graphic design in headless mode in the light of the dependency relationship between text and design. How does this austere (user-hostile?) relationship impact a designer’s thinking and practice?

Wittingly captured in a 1994 column by Umberto Eco, the analogy beween the Catholic/Protestant theological dichotomy on the one hand and the Macintosh/MS-DOS paradigms on the other hand, points to the dialectic of live and delayed visual feedback: “I am firmly of the opinion that the Macintosh is Catholic and that DOS is Protestant.”

Whether ultimately “the use of one system rather than another leads to profound inner changes” (Eco) is a question worth researching.

Design has increasingly become engaged with computer programming as a mode of expression. According to the "sapir-whorf hypothesis" language influences or even determines the way in which we think and understand reality. Yet, for the most we tend to uncritically think through things like HTML/CSS as the standard way of showing things on a screen. Yet these systems have often developed slowly over time invisibly encorporating or even locking-in ideas and ideologies.

Here are a few possible research topics

Trees, trees all the way down
One of the concepts that seem central is that of the "tree". In order to represent linguistic structures, computers use what is called a "parse tree".  Similarly, graphics software has a "scene tree" which represents objects to be drawn on the screen.

However, As design theorist Christopher Alexander argues lucidly in his essay "the city is not a tree" [1] one of the main failures of modernist urbanism was exactly the reliance on tree-like representations. This type of urbanism, Alexander says, ignores the fact that there are translateral links between elements, not only hierarchical ones.

This track will acquint participants with git and github, by working together on repurposing Github's functionality and experimenting with how version control can be integrated in the practice of creating an archive. At the same time, exploring the post-life of github repositories through forking, as a method of building on the work of others and creating new archives.
Alongside the practical experimentation, and in order to gain a better understanding of the underlying, but omnipresent, structures that support these archives and projects, we will also discuss the value of these networked archives / projects. If networked archives/projects are influenced by material conditions and take place through relations and being part of socially organised systems, then how do different elements and entities influence each other, its aesthetic and development? How are these networks articulated and how do they evolve? What are the different stages of (aesthetic, social and technological) development? What is the impact of changes from inside and outside influences, whether networks are dependent on specific structures or formations, or what kind of systems support or obstruct the evolution of networks? How open are they and when do they transform into something else? In what ways will variable or versioned networked archives affect the authority of the institutional organisation? How will their power in the era of openness, self-referential systems and active users change in favour of (co-)developing strategies that bridge varieties of cultural actors and professionals?
